Taking a Leap of Faith
Incorporated into my poster design are song lyrics in the background, a dandelion dispersing its seeds for more to grow, and a musical staff with the words “LEAP” in a font that portrays them as musical notes. As the pappus floats to find its way, it takes a leap of faith into the unknown, uncertain about what is to come, who will stay, who will leave, and not knowing what accomplishments and failures lay ahead, etc. As we are in our last semester as college students, many of us have to take that step of change into the next chapter of our lives, whether that be; University, an internship, a new job, a change of location, more traveling, and being independent. What inspired me to go in this direction was my passion for music, and expressing myself through emotion, delicacy, and poetical symbolism. Many of us can be afraid of the unknown when we're not certain what is to come in the future. Which can lead to doubt, and many disadvantages like missing the chance for an opportunity to do something that benefits us, making a difference, or taking a risk.

In my poster, I want to portray “Carpe Diem” which is the first term that I thought of when thinking of “Taking a leap of faith.” We only live this specific day once, and some opportunities don't come around often, so it's important that when they're in our grasp we take hold of that before it gets away. We must seize the day, to make the most of our time and take care of ourselves in the process. By doing what makes us most passionate and happy like; music, writing, theatre, art, saving people's lives in the medical field, building homes in 3rd world countries, traveling, learning languages, etc. I feel like music is a universal language that speaks to everyone; every ethnicity, culture, religion, gender, class, status has different kinds of music that distinguishes different identities, traditions, hardships, ways of speaking, values, lifestyle, etc. Like many things, music makes us feel. I chose to incorporate the colour of the dandelion as a nude tone to portray the softness and delicacy of the pappus.

I chose to colour in the lines with a lighter colour to portray the lightness of the flower as if completely weightless, which is usually the opposite of “taking a leap of faith.” Usually, those who are about to take a leap of faith describe it as heavy and feel tense, anxious, or worried. I wanted to look at the positive side of taking a leap of faith and focus on optimism. Human emotions are complex, constantly changing, and never resting just like the pappus of a dandelion. I chose to do “LEAP” and “ALC FESTIVAL” in a bold colour to make the theme and event name more striking and stand out more. The background is really busy, so I decided to not add any colour and leave it grey and add colour in the foreground to highlight the different elements in my poster. I chose to put the name of the event in bold to heighten the importance of the event and “LEAP” in a musical note font to draw attention to the musical aspect of taking a leap of faith in music, songwriting, and creation through one's passion.
