Raven Katsit'tsiio Edwards Brown
My name is Raven Katsit’tsiio Edwards Brown, I am a 20-year-old Kanienʼkehá꞉ka from Akwesasne, NY. I have been creating art since the age of 8; writing songs and poetry, painting, making sculptures, collages, and drawing. Most of my art creations revolve around storytelling and the importance of staying connected to one’s roots and culture. While also recognizing our relationships to people, the land, and our ancestors. I hope to promote Indigenous empowerment while challenging people of authority, questioning the system, and promoting action with my artwork. The themes that I cover usually contain inspiration from stories I've been told as a child and healing from intergenerational trauma.

This artwork that I created is thought-provoking, authentic, and hopeful, while I use vibrant colours driven by my emotion. Indigenous peoples all have different values and different perspectives. I have been geared towards breaking the cycle of stereotypes and dismantling those barriers. To ensure that those stereotypes do not define me. Instead, reconstructing my way of understanding what it means to be an Indigenous person living despite colonial violence. Through my interpretation of cultural identity, I hope to encourage dialogue between my artwork, storytelling, and the reality faced by Indigenous people. I engage with my emotions as a way of speaking truthfully through art. Allowing viewers the time to question their own assumptions of Indigenous people.
